Water Pump in Hallr Wood
It was wonderful catching up with the lovely Deb at Hallr Wood yesterday. The setting, with its stunning autumn colours, made the day even more special. We're thrilled to see that, two years on, the borehole and Bison Pump we helped provide are still going strong, supplying water for handwashing and dishwashing to everyone at Hallr Wood.
The first well was dug in October 2021 but sadly it failed as it hit a bank of sand which filled the hole. A second and successful well was dug in December 2021 reaching 30 meters in depth with an approx water yield of 2.00 cub/hr. Although the bacterial analysis looked promising, the chemical analysis of the water revealed high manganese and other metals which would clog up the average bore hole pump. We therefore provided a hardwearing Bison Pump from the US and the volunteers installed this over the summer of 2022.
Hallr Wood holds a special place in our hearts, and we're proud to have played a small role in supporting such an incredible project. We're hopeful we can find a way to filter this water and provide safe drinking water in the future.
For those who aren't familiar with Hallr Wood, it’s a community-led educational project in Somerset. They offer therapeutic forest school sessions for a wide range of people, with a particular focus on disaffected and SEN teenagers, many of whom participate in long-term programs. Please do look them up on Facebook. Or if you're in the area, Hallr Wood is open on Wednesdays to anyone who would like to join in.
